Unwelcome Digital Visitor

The Colour Ends If you feel the inclination, shed your skin & cry beneath the moon You may feel a sudden wish for, something cruel to run beneath your skin If you think that something is missing, make a prayer & send it through the clouds What I feel that you must realise, sometimes you wait for your reply As the clouds roll by & they’ll cry for you as the colour ends..... Can you feel the oscillation, sense the rush as your feet leave the ground The sky opens into daylight, as your desires exit from their vault We may see the misplaced city, or live to feel the strength of the Mayan dream But what I believe that you must realise, beneath the skin you’ll find all colour dies As the clouds roll by & they’ll cry for you as the colour ends.....

NERO 03:27
NERO Take what you need, you’re gonna need it Leave some for me; I’m sure we could share it Take all you want, I know you will anyway & you can watch us bleed while you photograph it I know your eyes, another place another life & you say they’re mine, well I don’t think so Take all you want, if I know you, I know you will & you can watch us bleed while you write about it all.... Who are you? Some kind of Nero? Asphyxia..... Take what you need.....

Thin Air 05:02
Thin Air Come to me to borrow, come to me to come to grief You stand there counting your tomorrows, though your now is inside out.... You’re listening in mono; your glass of hurt needs ice You’re swallowing your catch-cry, while the whole room is listening, Listening to you, what the hell is going on? The surgeon says I’m hollow, my engines incomplete & all I hear is hearsay, as it whispers up & down my spine You’re still listening in mono; you’re a black & white TV & there’s four & twenty blackbirds scratching out the insides of your eyes I turn to say something to someone & they’re not there I’m sure that I’m something to someone & not just thin air! Come to me to borrow, come to me to come undone You stand there counting your tomorrows in both hands now You still believe I’ll follow & you still believe your dream & you still insist on running while the whole world is watching Watch you falling..... I turn to say something to someone & they’re not there I’m sure that I’m something to someone & not just thin air!

Missing 04:00
Missing It’s gone missing But I’m not complaining Just explaining Come on & save me from, Save me from This city.....

The Uncertainty of being How do you see without seeing? Or is it just that you know where you’re going? How do you speak without speaking? The art of ventriloquism is dying! Your lips don’t move at all, no your lips don’t move... How do you hear without listening? I’m mistaken...well no one was speaking.... How does your skin break without bleeding? Or, could there be no blood at all? No blood at all, no blood to run free.... How can we touch without feeling? Do you know that it’s my heart your fingers are clutching? How can we feel without loving? Could there be no love at all? No love at all, no love to run free... Could there be no love at all?

Pianohead 04:00
Pianohead Strange hallucination happening to me A sickly sweet family, gathered around a Christmas tree & it’s the season to be jolly although I’m tired of all the dancing.... A thousand fingers inside my head, playing with my mind An elegance that I’ve never seen before though there’s trace elements of an unknown hatred A thousand fingers inside my head, playing with my mind There’s a thousand fingers inside my head, playing with my mind Like a piano Who are you to speak to me this way? I never liked you, let alone anything you say... There’s a thousand fingers inside my head, playing with my mind Like a piano playing with my mind

When? 04:15
When How many times must I hear, I’m the one Build a well for the tears, as they run Bring on fire, burn the fear to the ground How many times must I feel this in my heart? How many times? Must I walk on my own? To the place, where my name is unknown Bring the sword, cut the pain to the ground & let a new sense of you Grow in the wake... Oh, let it grow How many times? How many times must I hear, I’m the one who makes rain take the place, of the sun? Bring on fire, burn the fear to the ground! How many times must I feel this in my heart? How many times? How many times must I hear I’m the one? How many times?

Stateliner 791 You have to change rooms, then you die! Eavesdropping like a fly Speeding through, then you die You’re gonna get old, then you die! Counting down the time on a cheap VCR Swimming through the voices, occasional motor car Then you die... Von ‘Something –Strenzalenki’ for the family Mafiosi.... Things change a lot, then you die then you die..... They want your room They want your house & every little piece of your heart before they cut it out! They want it all, they want it now So smile & nod, before they skin us all....

about

Welcome to the light of day

Lost indie darlings back from oblivion...

From the day they first formed in Adelaide, Australia back in 1990, The Violets were an enigma. Created from a fusion of shimmering guitar lines, sonic abstraction and an almost cinematic vision, they smashed together light and dark, and made beautiful agony dance cheek-to-cheek with pretty mystery. It was pop, it was prog, it was flat out indie rock – but it was never quite like anything else.

After the burst of critical acclaim, industry awards and nationwide airplay that greeted releases like Subtitle, Somewhere and debut album Leased Regret, the quartet endured a mid-90s hiatus after personal and contractual issues disrupted their upward momentum.

Yet, even as the wagons circled and the attention of radio programmers and punters drifted, The Violets were writing their most sophisticated material; brooding, atmospheric songs strewn with literary allusion, dark psychology and bohemian playfulness.

Then, in 2001, their mysterious underground allure was cemented with one final act of ‘release and retreat’. A glittering, glowering, nigh prescient record, Unwelcome Digital Visitor, and then…nothing. The album got withheld and the band broke up.

Now, seventeen years later, The Violets will finally release UDV (as they call it). Its ten tracks mark a moment in time, artistically and personally for a band that always sought to mold their various influences into an idiosyncratic brand of alt-rock adventure.

The emergence of Unwelcome Digital Visitor is a rare moment in music archaeology; a buried treasure disinterred. For their hometown fans and worldwide cult audience, the sound of The Violets knocking on their door after all these years will surely be a very welcome surprise.
